“No Dignity In Growing Old” by S/M/B – song review

Growing old is an inherent part of human’s life, in which people start feeling more pain in their body and even a simple movement slowly becomes a struggle. However, this kind of pain is nothing compared to the feeling of regret. The saddest part of such a feeling is that you know you cannot go back in time and change some of your choices. This can hit you once your knee hurts after casually standing up from your bed for the first time or once you drop a mug because of your hand shaking, or even after recalling a certain memory.

The track „No Dignity In Growing Old” made by S/M/B perfectly captures the thoughts of a person hit by that emotion.

The arrangement is so varied and keeps a listener engaged through the whole song. The intro feels so majestic thanks to the beautiful strings section’s playing and powerful darbuka hits surrounded by other percussion instruments. The lead vocals in the verses are insanely deep. They come with just a piano and some cymbals playing in the background. When the bass and the darbuka come, everything starts to feel huge again. The rhythmic melody in the chorus is sang in a phenomenally-sounding harmony and it feels like there is so much attention paid to the rhythm in general. The song also contains mysterious bass clarinet parts, shocking organ lines and creative guitar licks.

To conclude, the track is not repetitive at all and lets a listener hear an important story told through the words and sound.
